Our new metal printer: what DMLS changes for small batches
Titanium and stainless steel parts in days instead of weeks, and shapes that could not be machined in one piece.

In August we installed a DMLS metal printer in hall B. It melts titanium and stainless steel powder layer by layer with a laser, building parts that are as dense as cast metal.
What it makes possible
- Lighter parts. Lattice structures inside a bracket cut weight by 40 % without losing stiffness.
- Fewer parts. An assembly of six machined pieces can become one printed part with no joints to leak.
- Faster spare parts. A discontinued steel part can be scanned, modelled and printed in a week.
Printing and machining together
Metal prints come off the plate with a rough surface. For bores, sealing faces and threads, we move the part to our 5-axis mill, where it is finished to ±0.01 mm. You get one order, one delivery and one inspection report.
